Vice President or CSO

Our client is an early stage, venture backed biotechnology company based in San Francisco, CA. Their mission is to treat age related diseases in fibrosis, metabolic, and neurological therapeutic areas. We are looking for a highly ambitious and experienced Vice President of Research to join our team on location in San Francisco. This is an opportunity to make a significant impact on the trajectory and success of the company. You will be leading the scientific team and a face of the company, reporting directly to the CEO.


Key Responsibilities

• Oversee and design key in vitro and in vivo studies to further build out disease specific data packages.

• Provide scientific leadership, expertise, and management to identify, design, and develop novel therapeutic research candidates from concept through clinic.

• Oversee pre-clinical model development to test novel therapeutics in vitro and in vivo.

• Contribute to strategic planning and drive pipeline alignment, focus, and resource allocation consistent with corporate objectives. Expand development of core company capabilities to drive competitive advantage.

• Author and/or critically review relevant research documentation, including company reports, regulatory documentation, grant applications, patent filings, and information requests.

• Report and communicate progress to executive management and actively collaborate with other functions (CMC, Clinical, Business Development) to advance the therapeutic pipeline.

• Interact in highly visible activities such as speaking to, negotiating, influencing, with high profile external stakeholders including KOLs, investors, board of directors, partners, or regulators.

• Manage key vendors, contractors, and consultant interactions to meet timelines and achieve deliverables.

• Identify the impact of key external developments as they relate to business and advise on shifts to strategic direction as appropriate.

• Champion a company culture of creativity, innovation, and collaboration. Promote an environment of support, respect, teamwork, resilience, and scientific rigor. Mentor research team at all levels.


Qualifications and Skills

• Ph.D. in immunology, cell biology, aging biology, or a related discipline, preferably with experience in NKT cell biology, T cell biology, inflammation, fibrosis, metabolism, or senescence biology. Exceptional M.S. and B.S. candidates will also be considered.

• 10+ years of relevant therapeutic development experience, with emphasis on discovery and early clinical translation of novel therapies

• Exceptional problem-solving and decision-making skills, with a strategic mindset and willingness to navigate challenges in a dynamic startup environment. Being a fast learner with meticulous oversight is key.

• Clear written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to communicate effectively with business partners, executive leadership, external consultants, and contract research organizations clearly and credibly.

• Strong interpersonal skills, leadership skills, and a high level of integrity. Ability to quickly build rapport with diverse teams, partners, and collaborators.
