My weekend at Lions Health - ‘Life-Changing Creativity’ - Mike Newman

The Cannes Lions Health festival in 2015 blew us away - the work that was on display and the inspirational programme of talks across the three stages were eye opening!

The decision to return in 2016 was a no brainer – Hannah and Laith flew in to our London office from New York and we set off.

The Lions Health weekend consists of back to back talks from 0945 to 1730, the awards presentation, Gala evening and in-between opportunities to network!!  It’s hectic, and for Laith and I, that’s exactly how it started, running for the departure gate at Gatwick (albeit the wrong departure gate) that Hannah had casually meandered to 20 minutes prior.

Over the next two days we attended many seminars that included contributions from a Hollywood Film Director, a Co-Anchor from Good Morning America, the United Nations, Facebook and Google, to name just a few.

Of all the sessions we attended, the standout was hosted by Saatchi & Saatchi Wellness on the Inspiration Stage – ‘The Power to Change Lives in All of Us’.  Their guest speakers: Olivia Hallisey, a high school sophomore who used her science project to design a way of detecting Ebola that increased the reach and effectiveness of Ebola testing!! And Dr Kent Brantly, a Medical Missionary to West Africa who himself contracted and survived Ebola whilst treating others for the disease.  A mind blowing 30 minutes that promoted the discussion, change always starts with action!

Of course the prestige of the awards ceremony plays a big part in the weekend, and once again the shortlist and eventual winners of the Bronze, Silver, Gold and Grand Prix Lions were truly global! 

Healthcare Agency of the Year went to Medulla Communications in Mumbai, the Grand Prix for Good went to Argentinian agency DAVID.

Ogilvy & Mather London blew the Pharma Judges away with their ‘Breathless Choir Campaign’ on behalf of Philips, picking up not just the Grand Prix, but an additional four Silver Lions and one Bronze Lion!!!

In the Health & Wellness section it was great to see longstanding clients of Meet triumph.  McCann Health picked up a Silver Lion for ‘Docusol Make a Nappy Happy’ ; DDB Remedy picked up Silver AND Bronze Lions for ‘Excedrin -The Migraine Experience’ on behalf of GSK Consumer; and Publicis Life Brands Resolute picked up Silver AND Bronze Lions for ‘Slam Poetry – Daniel’ on behalf of Novartis.

Getting up at 7am on Monday morning to fly back was far from pleasant post Gala….but once again we came away from Cannes full of inspiration, excited to be associated with the industry and looking forward to seeing what ‘Life-Changing Creativity’ would be instore for us in 2017…..
