A couple of weeks ago, on a wonderfully sunny day in NYC, I attended the HBA ‘Women of the Year’ event along with three of my colleagues and our COO, Hannah Donaldson. The Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association or HBA is a global non-profit organization comprised of individuals and businesses from across the healthcare industry who come together in support of one common goal: achieving gender parity!

The annual event, hosted HBA celebrates outstanding women leaders and male mentors who have supported gender parity in the healthcare industry. Amongst other awards the HBA nominates a woman as a Woman of the Year, this year the award went to Merck & Co.’s Global EVP Dr. Julie Gerberding. Julie, who joined Merck in 2010 as president of Vaccines, has worked collaboratively with other leaders inside and outside Merck to help globalize the business and deliver life-saving vaccines to people around the world. In her acceptance speech she talked about how leadership is not about a single individual, success “requires building a robust network of people who bring a diverse range of experiences and perspectives” an idea synonymous with Meet’s own #purpleblood mantra.

Having attended the event last year, our COO, Hannah suggested attending as a group this year. So along with four of our core clients we navigated the 2,000 + people attending the luncheon! It was no mean feat but provided a great opportunity to grow our network in NYC; giving us the chance to interact with some of the inspiring individuals shaping the future of the healthcare industry.

The atmosphere was incredibly contagious as every winner graciously accepted their award and spoke about the highs and lows of their careers. I was sitting with one of my clients who commented on what a fantastic opportunity it was to be able to attend and network with people of this calibre and that the current political climate, including the #MeToo campaign only strengthened how important the HBA are.

By highlight the achievement of the female leaders with in the industry through this event the HBA successfully create a space where men and women can discuss how to effectively support female talent to reach their full potential. As well as providing positive visibility of individuals who are not only changing lives through their work in the industry but also within their organizations by creating opportunities for talent to flourish!

Meet has had a fantastic couple of years building out the US market, opening offices in NYC, Chicago and San Francisco. Being able to attend events like this, that not only speak to many of our company values but are also within our industry is an incredible way to grow our partnerships with clients and gain further insight into the Life Sciences market.

We’re already looking forward to next year and keen to continuing going to similar events, if you have any recommendations please get in touch!
