Global HR Operations, Shire Pharmaceuticals
How was 2011 for Shire?
Shire has experienced tremendous growth over the past few years,
but more so in 2011. Our permanent headcount increased by 25%
globally! This is a massive feat, not just for Shire, but the
pharmaceutical industry as a whole. We have also dramatically
increased our utilisation of contract personnel in order to offer
Shire specialist support in all areas of the business. This
support is priceless and without which, Shire would not be in the
position it is today.
What has driven this success?
This growth is not only due to our acquisitions in 2011, it can
also be credited to our strong organic growth from within.
Many of our teams have doubled or tripled in size over the past
year. We hope this can continue long into 2012 and 2013.
How does 2012 look?
Our forecast for 2012 is just as positive as 2011. We aim
to grow around 20% organically worldwide. We have many new
products in the pipeline. These may not go to market in 2012,
but I am certain we will make great progress meaning we will be
able to offer our patients more life altering medications in the
future. Our aim is to be as brave as the patients we help -
2012 will be another big step in achieving this goal!
How is Shire different to other Top 20
Pharmaceuticals?
The culture within Shire is really geared towards our
patients. Everything we do is for them - whatever the
function; Finance, Biometrics, HR, Sales, Procurement, we are here
to help our patients lead better lives. I believe this is
what makes Shire stand out. This ethos is embedded in all our
staff and the core reason they work for Shire.
What sort of person would do well at Shire?
Simple - someone who is willing to go that extra mile for
others. Someone who is dedicated, enthusiastic and above all,
someone who understands and appreciates the real reason why we are
here - our patients!
